Gynecomastia is swelling around the bottom of the chest that makes a mans chest look more like breasts. Many times this is called man boobs, but fat on the chest and gyno are two completely different things. Gyno is caused by a hormonal imbalance. Either too much estrogen or not enough testosterone. It’s most common in teenage boys and dudes that take steroids.
60% of Teenage boys get it from puberty, and chances are that it will go away within a couple years. Generally speaking this condition will many times resolve itself by the age of 18 and reoccur again after the age of 60.
With steroids we have a huge influx in testosterone and our body tires to balance us out by pumping out more estrogen. Usually after you stop taking the steroids your body and hormones will go back to normal. However, sometimes it doesn’t. Especially when you take them for an extended period of time and don’t cycle them properly.
To prevent this problem in the future and avoid it entirely stay away from things that mess with your hormones. No performance enhancing drug is worth the cost if the cost is fluctuating hormones. I’m not saying that you can only get gynecomastia from taking steroids, but I am saying that if you take or are planning on taking steroids this is an issue that you can run into. Bottom line don’t take steroids they’ll mess you up sooner or later.
Before you assume that you have gyno, make sure that your body fat percentage is low enough. “Man boobs” are are not always cause by gyno, and are many times caused by too much body fat around the chest. 75% of the time people that claim to have gyno can get rid of it with diet and exercise.
To fix the problem you have to lower your body fat percentage below the 10-12% mark. Once you’re between the 10-12% mark, you can test yourself for gyno by pinching around your chest with your hand. As you get closer to the nipples If you still have fat and inconsistent tissue around them then you may just have gyno. However, many times just losing fat from your whole body will result in a decrease of fat around your chest as well.
Now If you actually have gynecomastia, then what exactly can you do to get rid of it. Well unfortunately this is one of those things that you can’t really solve with just exercise and diet alone. If you have chest fat, you can burn that right off with a proper diet and exercise program. However tackling real gyno is not so simple. There are pills out there that you can take that specifically target the mammary glands, but these don’t always prove to work the way they promise.
You can do the most epic chest workouts week after week and the issue will persist. In fact the muscles that you’re building may even bulk the area and cause an even worse apearance. The only known effective solution is surgery.
Many people that just have the fat removed may have it reoccur in the future. So make sure if possible that you get the whole gland removed, so you don’t run into this issue ever again.
Do not forget that 75% of the time this is an issue you can fix. So try to fix it with diet and exercise before you jump the gun and assume you have Gyno. I don’t recommend looking into surgery if you haven’t already taken your body fat percentage to at least 14%.
